North East Culture Social
North East Culture Social creates space for artists, producers and makers across the region to come together, share learning and create new ideas.
In spring 2022, we joined forces with Curious Monkey to host the very first North East Culture Social Pop-Up Retreat in Newcastle upon Tyne. It was a day of conversation, focused on co-creation and how we work with communities.
That first Culture Social was a chance to share our experiences of co-creation, and to explore how communities and artists can come together to make theatre, music, writing and visual art.
Since then, Unfolding Theatre has hosted North East Culture Socials at venues across the region – from Old Coal Yard to Alphabetti Theatre, ARC Stockton to Gosforth Civic Theatre. With each event, the network grows. We welcome both familiar and new faces, and we’re always expanding the conversation.
The themes we explore have grown too. Together, we’ve tackled the big questions shaping creative work in our region:
Why aren’t disabled people better represented on the boards of North East charities and cultural organisations?
What would it take to make the North East the best place to be a disabled cultural worker?
What are the ingredients of a good creative project in the community? How can this inspire the cultural work we do next?
North East Culture Social is about connection – bringing people together to reflect, listen and imagine better ways of working. We’d love to see you at the next one.
